First time poster here, have been interested in getting into more enjoyable self/bondage scenarios.
Has anyone purchased this spreader bar with the top locking mechanism close enough to the hands to lock/unlock safely solo? Or know of a similar bar that would work well?

You can also make it with an electromagnet like viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13108#p98926, but with three openings instead of a single opening.
There are some descriptions here on BoundAnna with various methods to free you.
It seems to me difficult to get to the lock with your hands in the link you provided (handcuffs are stiff and arms stretched out far so that you cannot automatically push them further forward to get to the lock with your fingers).
Not that it's impossible: you can, for example, replace the padlock with an iron wire long enough on one side that you can push it out of the connecting bar in the middle of the spreader bar.
You can also make it with an electromagnet like viewtopic.php?f=12&t=13108#p98926, but with three openings instead of a single opening.

I have seen an add o the site of a German supplier who says it can be used for SB, but I wouldn't want to risk it without a human back up.

I would suggest running a few experiments. Lock just one hand, the hand you would normally use to operate the lock. Then see if you can release that hand, using just that hand. If you can't, then use your free hand.
Run the experiment several times, at least one after the time period you are thinking of having yourself bound. Things might be different after your hands go numb or cramping starts in.
