Timer padlocks again (new model)
Re: Timer padlocks again (new model)
i have been watching too much lockpickinglawyer on youtube. tonight i was squirming around in my scavengers daughter device made from structural tubing found at lowes. i was using these metal body timer locks and had set them to one hour. after about 20 minutes i was wanting out, but there was no way i can even wiggle enough to turn 90 degrees, let alone reach the set of keys locking the cuffs to the device. then i thought of some lock picking videos i had seen on the lockpickinglawyer's youtube channel of rapping on the lock body to release the locking lug. i tried smacking the lock body on the steel tubing and the lock popped open on the second try...... that worked SO easy to get myself free, it was kind of disappointing that i could get free from it so easily..... here is a link showing what im talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnkiOvGBuOo
For those that get it, no explanation is needed. For those that don't, no explanation is possible.

Yep. I avoid watching his videos on locks I own for exactly this reason. It takes away all the fun!TNTBound wrote:i have been watching too much lockpickinglawyer on youtube. ... that worked SO easy to get myself free, it was kind of disappointing that i could get free from it so easily
That is a good secondary backup, though. I don't think self-bondage escape is the precise reason he uploads videos, but ah well.

And if you go back one page on this thread, you'll see where I described exactly this attack ... (which I actually figured out myself). You can bang the lock body against a hard object for the same effect as tapping it with a hammer or other tool.
Re: Timer padlocks again (new model)
so, i was having a think about this padlock for one of my scenarios involving locking myself in a canvas sleepsack with this lock as my release mechanism, as i wont have use of my hands for anything. one concern i had was that when it pops open, that the paracord or magnetic leash connector could get stuck on the lock shackle if its tilted the wrong way. my thought is to modify the lock so that the shackle simply ejects completely from the lock body on release. it looks like in this picture (from earlier in this post) there is a pin that stops the shackle from coming out completely, so if i remove that pin and secure the spring to it cant fly out, then the shackle would eject and it would be safer for my intended purpose.
another thing i was looking at was the motor. this lock can jam up if there is enough tension on the shackle and not release, so i was thinking there might be a larger motor that can fit into the cavity like from my scx 24 rc, but upon taking the lock apart, that motor is WAY to big for this little lock. i guess what i'll try is adding a little lubricant to the sliding parts to help with this, as i dont think there is any more that i can do about that.
as i have the lock apart, im thinking a dab of hot glue should hold the spring in place. i have the pin out and the shack completely separates now as well, just like i was hoping it would.
with my sleepsack scenario, i dont think there will be enough tension on the lock to jam it up.

here is a picture of the shackle separated with the removed pin next to the hole.

Yes, in your sleeping bag scenario there are no strong forces on the lock itself.TNTBound wrote:with my sleepsack scenario, i dont think there will be enough tension on the lock to jam it up.
As long as the rings of your sleeping bag are thick enough that they don't get caught in the hook and gap on the other side of the pin. But even that doesn't cause much of a problem: just shake your sleeping bag and everything will come loose.
Re: Timer padlocks again (new model)
Big sigh.
I bought two more of the metal timer padlocks to supplement the two I already have. I tried them out tonight, and while they basically work, a sharp tug pulls the stupid things right open!
Not impressed.
The ones I got look the same but are a darker colour, although I've seen both colours offered by other vendors. So not sure of the darker ones differ in other ways....

Oooh, how sad.
Thanks for the information if I were to buy 2 more with my 2 padlocks.
