Re: Corona
We have had our first Corona death in New England. Are the old school diving suits still efficient at keeping the virus out?

Re: Corona
the mass panic caused by the media is way out of hand. people should not be wiping the shelves like they currently are! went to a store yesterday and all the hamburger, hotdog and loafs of bread were completely gone, not one left. same with the toilet paper isle (still not a damn clue as to why this isle is wiped out). people need to chill the F out! im so damn sick of the fear mongering going on! people are effing stupid right now!
For those that get it, no explanation is needed. For those that don't, no explanation is possible.

A very good source (with only vetted numbers from official sources) is the CoronaVirus dashboard by Johns Hopkins University: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps ... 7b48e9ecf6

Re: Corona
That's a good find, G.
We do have some advantages over the 1918 outbreak, I would say one of the biggest is the internet. It allows both communication and self isolation measures. So there's that.
In the US, our tests of people showing symptoms are 11% Corona positives, 89% negative which are usually later diagnosed as similar, but unrelated ailments, like flu, common cold, allergy, and hypochondria. So, I guess there is about a 1 in 10 chance if you had too close of an encounter here, that it will turn up later and Corona.

Re: Corona
Just seen an article, that I checked out... Corona virus is killed by high heat... Saunas are going to be very popular soon...
https://www.bing.com/search?pc=COSP&pta ... ed+by+heat
I just hope this is as real as it seems...
I was forwarded a video from a facebook friend from Futureworld about how the virus is susceptible to heat.
(Now I need to find a link to the original video.)

All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

Re: Corona
I've seen that claim
I've seen that claim before, but I find it a bit suspect. I also don't think it's a good idea to go to a sauna if you think you might have this virus.Dark_Lizerd wrote:Just seen an article, that I checked out... Corona virus is killed by high heat... Saunas are going to be very popular soon...

Re: Corona
Yes, very very unlikely. When the infection rate is not slowed down there is an exponential growth with an aproximated doubling rate every 3 days.Gregovic wrote:Very, very VERY unlikely for this to be over in 30 to 60 days. Likely over a year before things return to some semblance of normalcy (or SARS-CoV-2 just becomes a fact of life)tiemeupalso wrote:in 30 60 days this will all have died down and the MSN will come up ith another "crises" to scare the hell out of everyone.
The math is easy: 30 days => 10 doublings => factor 1024 => 10.000 cases today accumulate to 10.240.000 cases in 30 days.
The percentage of serioius cases with need of respiration support is a small number. But a small percentage of such huge numbers is still big enough to overload any health care system.
I'm not in panic. But this is a serious threat that needs responsible attention.

Re: Corona
Did anyone ever notice that about 99.999% of the stuff on the Internet is stupid stuff?
Crap? Junk? Malarkey? Horsehockey? Bullplop?
To paraphrase a former NASA flight director (Chris Kraft) - if you don't know what to do, don't use the internet to tell you what to do.
* Heat does kill the virus, but that's why the body does the fever bit. Sometimes the body overdoes it a bit. Having fevers over 40C/104F for just a few days is a reason to see your doctor. Before your internal organs go to hell.
* I read one thing about 56 degrees C / 133 degrees F kills the virus. That's assuming the virus is not inside of you. Attempting to subject your body to sustained temperatures of this order - i.e. long enough to kill the virus inside and out - will kill you too (or leave you somewhat cooked - see above about fevers).
* One of the sites suggesting doing the heat thing on yourself just happens to be a site called Sauna Marketplace. What a coincidence!
* The drinking water every 15 minutes bit is a load of steaming crap. Drinking more than a half liter an hour when you're not sweating buckets can lead to reduced electrolyte levels (not good), and (even worse) water intoxication. Yes, you can be "drunk on water". The water your overloaded kidneys can't handle is stored in your body tissues, including the brain. In the brain, it can lead to swelling, increase in cerebrospinal fluid pressure, pressure on the outer surfaces of the cortex, which can cause confusion, loss of motor coordination, unconsciousness or death. Not a nice way to go, but you won't be thirsty.
* and so many other things that are crap...
Basically, if it doesn't come from a doctor (I mean a serious one, not like the one that was infected and went to work at a senior's residence anyway), it's garbage, a scam, or malicious.
Jenny.

Note that if you put your hand into water that's 56C then you'll suffer 3rd degree burns within 15 seconds.bound_jenny wrote:* I read one thing about 56 degrees C / 133 degrees F kills the virus. Related: You should never set your residential water heater above 48C (US Safety Product Safety Commission guidelines). That'd take 5 minutes to generate a burn. In general baths and showers shouldn't be above 37C, which shouldn't cause burns at all.
Saunas can get hotter than that because you're not immersing your skin in water (e.g. 80C for 5 minutes), but it shows that the sort of temperatures we're talking about are not healthy. If your skin ever gets to the temperature we're talking about then you'll burn, and if your insides get to that temperature... well, you'll be dead long before then!

The last people to listen to for health advice are politicians. Watch out who you are taking financial advice from as well.
We have a new problem. With so many working from home, personal information is at risk, that is, if they are processing work data on the same machines used for downloading porn. Pornhub has reported a sharp rise in traffic. As you know, pornographic files are often used to Trojan malicious software. What are you gonna do?
Thank you all for keeping this thread honest and reliable, and more than that, thank you for staying safe.

With so much of the world shutting down, how is everyone using this time?

Work is still going on for me. Just working from home currently, but might go to the office if need be. Not that much more free time from normal, just the archery that's currently not happening.
