Attachment 'too large'(?)
Attachment 'too large'(?)
I am trying to upload a single page of black & white drawings (1 jpeg file, 602KB) that gets the message "file is too big, max 512KiB".
What is the best way to do this? Can I re-format somehow to get it in range? . . . or scan original as ?pdf & try again?
. . . . ...... any help would be appreciated!
THANKS

Hi,
You should process a little the said picture:
- easiest at save, tune the quality (85%...75%...so on).
- You could reduce the "colors" (grays) and save as gif with 256 or 16 levels (or even 2: black and white)
Consider using gimp (gimp.org): it's open source, rivals Photo$hop, plenty of plugins and:
- when saving jpeg, You could preview quality while tuning.
Good Luck, Have Fun,

What FatherOfFour wrote is correct. And Gimp rocks - I've been using it for a few years now and it's stable, has lots of processing options, and it's free!
Why a file size limit? The host computer has only a finite amount of storage space. That's the most important and practical reason. It's also fair to people with slower connections - they don't have to wait a couple of hours for a huge-ass image to load.
If you must post a large photo (sometimes it's impossible or ineffective to play with the image's settings) try using an image-hosting site like ImageBam to store your large image and post the thumbnail and link on the forum.

Thanks for the responses!
I realized my desk top scanner is making way bigger files than my camera does of the same image, so I just took a photo of the drawing & posted that instead of trying to fiddle with settings or changing formats. . . .... a sure route to more confusion for me (Certified Digitally Illiterate)!

Re: Attachment 'too large'(?)
so where did you finally end up posing the pic?
Re: Attachment 'too large'(?)
It's in the 'DIY' forum, under 'Low-Tech Handcuffs'.
I shot the photo in the evening, with almost no ambient light besides a desk lamp (no flash to avoid glare spots), & it's dark gray-tinted but readable. I may try again in brighter light, but first I need to make some qualifying diagrams to show more details of how the idea of fabric loops can be used in a number of ways for quick home-made bondage.

your desktop-scanner should have an option that allows you to set resolution & compression to your liking to produce smaller files.Fogbound wrote:Thanks for the responses!

Hi,
GIMP is way too complicated for the normal pervert with only one pair of brains
For cropping and resizing (*) I use IrfanView. Verry small, verry fast! And easy to use
Joe.
(*) and watching slide shows with pictures of erotic content.

To make sure the other pair of brains is OK, you need a mammogram.CaptainJoe wrote:with only one pair of brains

Re: Attachment 'too large'(?)
My recommendation for simple image editing is Paint.net. Free program, has enough image editing capabilities to get by, and yet an interface that's basic and intuitive. GIMP is certainly functional, but it's working on the same kind of scale as photoshop - both programs are more based around creating art rather than simple image tweaks.
I haven't used irfranview since the early 2000s (and even then, it was probably out of date - hooray for high school computers), so no comment on what it's like these days.

There are lots of online resizing sites too.
