OK, everyone else covered the "looks good" and "Nice work"... but...
(and yes, it does look very good)
If you reversed the hinge so that the pivit part is on the outside, you could have the leather padding cover every thing...

That doesn't work. For the hinge to open, the leather would have to go around the corner, when the hinge closes, the leather forms a 'bubble' much bigger than the hinge, which is only just proud of the height of the leather.

Anyhow, it is that way for the pleasure of the observer, not the comfort of the wearer!

Looks like you used aluminum, and the stitching on the leather looks like maybe a belt?
Could you get a picture from the side, showing how you attached the hinges, etc. It kind of looks like you used pop rivets, but can't really tell. If so, I'm wondering how you dealt with the ends of the rivets on the inside of the collar. Pop rivets leave a protruding end that could be a problem. Did you make holes for them in the leather, to provide relief, sort of like the gap for the hinges, or just let the leather go over them? Or did you use another style of rivet or fastener? As a DIY type guy myself, I'm always curious as to the details.

They were pop rivets, however I knocked the spindle through and treated them as normal rivets. The hinges had a slight countersink, and I was able to pound the ends of the rivets into this space so they were flush with the face of the hinge.
The pin for the padlock is made from a roof bolt and I did recess the leather to go over the head of it.
No pictures from the side. (it's not so pretty)

Nice! I never tried to use pop rivets that way. The countersink for the screws didn't occur to me, that would indeed help to keep thing smooth. Thanks for the ideas.

The rivets used for leather work could also be used, they are 2 piece with a smooth back.
