Not being offensive or insulting, just curious. When did Americans stop saying they speak English and start saying they spoke American?
I seem to have noticed it a bit since that Trumpy fellow was president.

It's nothing new and has nothing to do with Trump or some other political thing.

No I didn't want to get political, its just seems strange when people call another countries language by a different countries name. After all English is English through out the world like any other language. Of course i talking about the spoken language. When it comes to written language there are many forms of English. We generally say British English , North American English etc. and so on.

Why other countries that use English as there first language can't learn to spell it correctly is beyond me. No that was a joke, the different way people spell English can be interesting. I did some of my schooling in Canada and learnt to spell the North American way then when my family returned to England and I continued my schooling in England I suddenly find I'm spelling alsorts of words wrong and had to learn the English way of spelling.

Mind you if you see some of my posts you'd probably see my command of English spelling relates mostly to neither British English or North American, more like my own make it up as I go along English.
