Emergency release?

Post by repe68 »

I am working on a new (to me at least) scenario.

I have a small backpack, in it I have a magnet door lock powered by a little 12v battery. There is also a timer, from 0 to 180 min.

The magnet is on the back of the backpack... I mean it is attached to the outside of the backpack so that when I lift my lockable wrist restraints behind my back they connect and I am stuck.

I just tested the system for the first time and it feels as there is potential, but how would you set up an emergency release?

Use a battery small enough to go flat within a couple of hours.

For release, you could use a seat belt cutter fixed in an appropriate place.

as emergency release you could just pull the plug, so to speak, i. E. Pull the battery wire.

Big question : how do you ensure there is a penalty for using the ER ?

This is what I meant, the battery will go flat and a wire can be pulled.

But the penalty?

- Bind something valuable to the wire so that pulling the wire will destroy it.
- Fill a small canister with paint (that kind you cannot wash off) and connect the cover to the wire (and the bottom part to something else) and wrap it around something you don't want to be colored (e.g. expensive clothes).
I guess you can modify most techniques which work for other release methods to work with this one.

For an emergency release, I use a special Sail Boat piece of
hardware used to quickly detach a sail from the line,
They use it mostly on Jib's and Spinnakers. It is an eye hook
with a quick release ring at the bottom of it. One slight push
on the ring in the rite direction, and the hook opens immediately.
works real good.

The seat belt cutter would ruin the straps on the backpack ( maybe not the worst of penalties, but annoying)
