Something really avoid is hexavalent chromium. You can create it by heating chromium plated metal, say while brazing or welding. It causes a whole range of health problems. Just Google hexavalent chromium and you will see what I mean. It certainly causes dermatitis as I discovered. Fortunately I did some research and replaced of the offending component immediately. So, DIYers note - do not braze or weld a piece of chrome plated metal even if it is exactly right for a nice pair of secure shackles or whatever.

This is an interesting thread. Even though I know that some materials are poisonous, I don't think about it too much and I should. :shock:
