how to properly use the special ring device ( SRD ) in SB

Hello,

This question has probably been already answered in many ways but couldn't gather all the info and I though a new thread would be the opportunity to sum everything on the topic. Please apologize if it already exists and redirect me to the right place.

The SRD (special ring design) is a cheap and effective mechanism to to tighten a rope loop without possibilities to loose the tension. Schema is available on boudanna for those who don't know it.

It is a good friend for us, SB enthusiasts, so we can tie ourself alone. But as usual, an improper use can make us locked and that's why I would like to discuss on the topic, for ideas and experience sharing.

Since it's rope based, the rope can always be cut to release. But how to do some good strict bondage when it may not be easy to use a scissor? I read about combining with ice-lock? Any design proposal?

I'm looking for ideas!

mymy42,

The simplest combination SRD and ice lock is to get a small but sturdy drawstring bag (nylon stocking will work, but is stretchy and hard to tie well on double rings), put an ice cube or two in it, put the drawstrings through a metal ring, then tie the two rings of the SDR together with the drawstrings. Put the pulling rope through the two rings, then fasten the single ring where you can't reach it (e.g. to a shoulder harness at the back of your neck). Tie the pulling rope to ankles, wrists, or whatever and tighten. You can use scissors in an emergency, but the ice will eventually melt, releasing the bag from the ring.

I've tried SRD(s) for a few sessions, but found they lack the power multiplier I needed in strappados or hogties.
(see: http://forum.boundanna.net/board/viewto ... 456#p75456)
Since then, I mostly use nylon straps ratchet:
(see: http://forum.boundanna.net/board/viewto ... 953#p75953)

I'm still using SRDs for "secondary release" or other props needed in the scene...

Have fun, tighten that rope...

Be warned, don't use welded rings !!!!!!!!!!! use only cast rings,
this is a photo of a welded ring that trapped me for almost 25 hours.

Found the story: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10786. See part 5.

TL;DR The weld on some cheaper rings can break if under a lot of pressure, and if the ring metal is strong enough the end of the ring can catch on or impale the rope in the SRD. Even if you are able to reach the rope with one hand, escape may be extremely difficult because the ring acts like a hook.

If you are using welded rings you need to either get good ones or re-weld them yourself. I've never thought of this failure mode but it would suck.
