Cassette Player Release

Post by orgasm0901 »

The main method of release i have used is this. I have a digital timer hooked up to a cassete player. i then press the play button, but since there is power going to it at the moment it does not play. Around the knob that turns when it is on is a string that has my keys connected to them. Using the end that does not have the keys i wind it twice and pull it tight. i set the timer and boom im stuck. When the timer activates turning on the cassete player, the knob turns, the string no longer has tension and is literaly wheeled off the knob and falls. of course i have an ice release backup for power failures, but the method works well and can be timed to the exact minute.

as a note, the speed of a cassette tape is 1 7/8" inches per minute.

The capsan and pinch roller create the speed, the others are just take ups on a slip clutch.

If you don't get the keys while they are being lowered won't the string start to wind back up after it's fully unwound pulling them out of your reach again?

I can imagine seeing freedom disappear at 1 and 7/8'' inches a second...

It said: "Take the end and WIND it".
Wind - not knot. The friction between cord and reel will hold the key.

For me the simplest release with the least components is always the best. When you start adding a gadget here and a gadget there, you get in trouble.

I fully agree, a simple electromagnet connected to the timer(s) would be far more reliable and just as good. I know I keep reading about concerns re. residual magnetism but as long as the keys are heavy enough and you've done tests then it's a complete non-issue. And has been discussed before if the magnet is powered by batteries then the release is virtually failsafe.

If you are worried about the keys magnetizing and sticking to the electromagnet.... try this...
Add a string so you can pull the keys off if they do stick...
But, the string will break if you try to pull them off with the magnet on...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

Use an analog timer. Digital timers have a bad habit of losing their program when the power fails. Analog timers pick up where they left off when the power is restored.

That is the advantage of the electromagnet. If the power fails the keys will drop.
