actually it's the white one that isn't involved, but clearly wishes he was!

can't say for sure it applies to all dogs, but the male mounts the bitch, as you would expect from the "doggy position", then once inserted, the penis swells at the tip and locks it in place inside the bitch. The male then does a rather difficult reversal until they end up as seen in the photo. This position is maintained for a while, often tens of minutes, until fertilisation has taken place. I assume this position allows defence from both ends, as both dogs would otherwise be vulnerable to attack if they stayed in the "mounted" position.

I imagine the white dog had a good dose of female pheromones and decided it was worth a try. Or just one of those damned perverts...
