Correct me if I'm wrong but maybe Blacky meant that if there is anyway of bookmarking the forum that automatically shows all the threads as readed.

Some kind of: forum.boundanna.net/allthreadsreaded.php

It seems like I don't find the right words to explain my idea.

At the moment every registered user gets to see the "unread posts" signal (red circle around the textpage-icon) upon logging in.
This happens automatically and for every topic.

In pseudo code this could be somewhat like this:

for each thread in forum:
If ( Timestamp of newest content >= Timestamp of last login)
{set new content mark};

My idea was to have some sort of checkbox for every major topic. By checking this, the user would state "Please show me when there are new posts in here".

That way the routine could work like this:

for each thread in forum:
if (Checkbox checked && Timestamp of newest content >= Timestamp of last login)
{set new post notification};

That way the effort for such notifications would be reduced to actively demanded alerts. At the moment it's a passive system. You can't chose not to be hinted at new posts.

As stated above I'm not sure whether this can be of any help at all. I'm neither familiar with php nor with the forums' database at all.

I hope I could explain my idea in an understandable manor now? If not, please feel free to ask and I'll try again

Sounds plausible...
And your pseudo code does cover your idea well....
If a section is not checked as a follow, auto mark as read...
But for new users, should the default setting as "follow all" or "follow none"???
Maybe a third icon option Blue=read, Red=unread, Yellow=un-read, but not followed...

And you knowledge of php and forum structure matches mine...
(But I do know PC programming... ;) )
The main question to ask now is... Is the effort to do the code change worth the effort that would benefit a few...

I would have to say "questionable"... sorry.
Just do what I do, read what you want toss (mark as read) the rest...
There is several things I don't follow here...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

It must be "follow none" to have any positive effect. After all I was aiming at the "Large database due tue marked unread"-issue.

Unfortunaly, set to follow none, and a new user, not famlure with the setting will not see any new posts and think the forum is dead...

Actually... if the forum did not track anything,
and when you log-in it could run a small code that highlights just new posts since your last visit...
The system would only need to track 1 date per user... "Date of last log-in"...
read/unread would not mater...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

True. And a decider to me.
I'd vote against my own idea now...

I think the best way to do it, is to: Check the fora in your interest, the click "mark forums read" before logging out to clear the rest of them.

Well, not everything that looks great at first sight proves to be at a second glance.
But I can sure handle that!

i'm not familiar with phpbbs DB's on an ACP access basis, but i know my way around with IPB & VB. the latter even with large & active memberships measuring 70+ K.

IME it's not so much about what each member does, but the number of members.

@anna: in VB ACP server load averages are displayed when logging to the ACP. these usually give one a good idea if action should be taken. a lot of times it really helps if a few minor server settings are changed. this "userbased stuff" is more like the "very obscure chinese traditional medicine" route.

Vely vely tue*. But it achieved the goal I wanted from it. See it as a sort of feasibility study, the result was above expectations.

you can delete my account, that will help a little. I'm getting tired of reading bullshit that has nothing to do with the topics being discussed, for example this thread about improving the forum database has fucking racism in it. good bye.

Really?

No ethnic or racial group was denigrated, slurred, or otherwise attacked. This forum is, quite the contrary, an example of tolerance of diversity in every form.

There are far more insidious forms of racism present today, in the world, than the classic definition. There are the politically-correct run amok, who cry racism at the slightest reference to any other ethnicity. There are those who want to protect diversity by suppressing any reference to said diversity (which is kind of contradictory because to admit diversity, one has to admit that some people are different). And then there are the race baiters who try to inject racism into everything.

Any of the above irritate me in the highest degree. And anyone who accuses us of racism on such trivial grounds is a candidate for an irritant too.

I will never accept that we be labeled as racist by anyone.
