I want to see how safe it would be for me to share my occupation here. I may be able to better contribute. I figure this is the best way to find out. Thanx in advance for your participation.

I'm a mechanical engineer (according to most of the world, not applicable in certain US states). What kind I don't want to get in to too much, mostly because it's a long story.

I was a Carpenter for over 50 years. Mostly houses, but High End Trim. I built radius stairs.
Hated to retire, but the body just does not act like it use to.

Not sure what your point is here. I'm assuming by "safe" you mean can someone identify you from knowing your job. Unless you have a unique job, say POTUS, rock star, astronaut, mayor of (insert major city here) , there are probably hundreds or thousands of folks who have the same basic job description, so it's not like someone can figure out who you are by your job. I'm retired. Who am I?

Also don't see how this is related to site feedback, which is supposed to be about how the site works, (or doesn't), feels, etc. This is more of a discussion topic, or an everything else topic.

I appreciate everyone for voting on my poll. Just that is very helpful to me. I also appreciate letting me get to know some of you through your posts.

anyone asking personal questions(as any investigator knows) is that ask one here another on a different post ,etc and you can build up a profile of a person and eventually find out who they are.

I assure ya'll, that is not my intention. I would be just fine with votes only. Have I ever done anything so obvious? Thanx again.

timeupalso makes a very good point. Nobody is accusing the OP of trying to identify any forum member, but you should be aware of data mining.

In these days of "big data" you have algorithms that cross-reference. For example, if you use FaceBook and your smartphone has location/GPS on, I understand you can get "you might know xxxx who is in your area" messages. Perhaps you have posted a photo on Facebook, or even on this site, without removing the EXIF file, that photo file contains the location and time/date of the photo, and might cross-reference with an innocent photo taken at much the same time, posted on FaceBook and shared with your friends and found by Google's "image" search engine.

Add in job description, perhaps a bit of info about your living circumstances - bought a new house and mentioned it, then given cues to the location (EXIF file again), just got married/divorced, new car (with photo) etc.

OK, why would anyone bother to pick on you ? Probably not. But then there is the criminal world, looking for blackmail victims. I don't know about you, but I have had several "pay me your bitcoins" threats from someone who has supposedly hacked my account, recorded me "enjoying myself" watching (ha ha) perverted porn and making a two-screen video of the occasion. Perhaps a bit of information might give them a real edge?

so I would advise caution on how much personal information you give. Remember, once it is on the internet, you have no further control over what happens to it.

Have you heard of "Grinder". Heard about it on the NPR Radio. Apparently, a threat to national security in the US. Either to black mail, or, send in a spy posing as a dating partner, in ordeer to illicit secrets about the country. But they use identifying photos on that site.
Incidentally, for blackmail to work, someone else has to give a darn about what the black mailer might tell about the black mailee.

This is a place where anyone is free to share anything. We all know the caveats of sharing personal things on the Internet, especially a forum where anyone, including non-members, can view just about anything here.

But the keyword is "free". Whatever anyone decides to share or not is their own decision. We can gently remind them of the aforementioned caveats without getting mean or nasty but it still remains the decision of the poster and the poster alone. We need to respect that, period. Yet another keyword: respect.

This is not a political arena where everyone engages in the personal destruction of everyone else who has a different view of things.

So far, I haven't seen anything in this thread that hasn't been mentioned before in another thread somewhere back in time on this forum. I remember a lot of stuff about the people here (like Rader being an hors-pair carpenter). If there was data to be mined, well, the mine was completely dug out a long time ago. So far no men in black suits have knocked on my door to confront me with my personal life (if one day they do, they'll get a demo of my whip handling skills).

No one's here to prove anyone wrong. All of us are here to help everyone be right in the exercise of their kink.

Just to add my 2c - I'm middle management entrusted with the care and feeding of some occasionally mindless reprobates of the computer programmer variety (and a few electronics techs that tend to be somewhat more orderly). In other words, I'm a zookeeper.

It is amazing how much you can find on people, just using open sources, once you have found a place to start.

This is like an exact mirror of the other ongoing thread right now. Except instead of "how do I play with a gasmask" it's "what do you do for a living"

But the result is the same. A deluge of posts about every possible "risk" angle a person can think of and a shit load of virtue-signaling about how smart you all are for not falling for the data-miner's hacking attempts!!!

poster asks a simple question....like the simplest of simple questions. It's probably the second or third thing you're asked every single time you meet someone new. Completely harmless question.

And here we are having a big long discussion about "what can go wrong" if you confess to being a plumber. Holy crap.

In somewhat less brutal terms, I agree.

If anyone thinks that they're at a huge risk of data mining or hacking or some other cybercriminal activity if they post their occupation here (remember, I'm a zookeeper), just think of the endless media reports of hacks of much bigger fish (banks, credit card companies, social media sites, etc.) than this place where they steal much more valuable and critical personal information than anything found here.

And I'm not even getting into the oodles of personal info just about every social media junkie posts on their Facebook, Twitter, Snapbrat, Booglebricks, CheezWhiz and other accounts (where most of those social media operators are very sloppy with their customers' personal info security - talk about data mining ).

Everyone cool off, please. Sit back, sip your tea or coffee and just enjoy being here on Bound Anna. Whether you want to share your occupation with us or not is your own business. Live and let live, they say. A kinder, gentler mindset is always a wise choice.
