Email phishing scam

Post by Shannon SteelSlave »

So, I recently got this email, and although it was in my spam folder, I did find it rather shocking to see an old password of mine as the title of an email. Until I received the same message from another address, word for word, but with a different bitcoin address and ransom amount. I don't think anyone here is naive enough to actually pay these "black mailers", but I am posting this to keep you from wasting any time at all worrying about it. I searched for the first few sentences of the email on google just to see where it could have come from. Here is the body of the email :

I know ******** is one of your password on day of hack..

Lets get directly to the point.

Not one person has paid me to check about you.
You do not know me and you're probably thinking why you are getting this email?
in fact, i actually placed a malware on the adult vids (adult porn) website and you know what, you visited this site to experience fun (you know what i mean).

When you were viewing videos, your browser started out operating as a RDP having a key logger which provided me with accessibility to your display and web cam.

immediately after that, my malware obtained every one of your contacts from your Messenger, FB, as well as email account.

after that i created a double-screen video. 1st part shows the video you were viewing (you have a nice taste omg), and 2nd part displays the recording of your cam, and its you.

Best solution would be to pay me $6416.
We are going to refer to it as a donation. in this situation, i most certainly will without delay remove your video.

My -BTC -address : 1LyWy64Tp6emXv3cN7WmRwSnabXStQK

[case SeNSiTiVe, copy & paste it]

You could go on your life like this never happened and you will not ever hear back again from me.

You'll make the payment via Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search 'how to buy bitcoin' in Google).

if you are planning on going to the law, surely, this e-mail can not be traced back to me, because it's hacked too.

I have taken care of my actions. i am not looking to ask you for a lot, i simply want to be paid.

if i do not receive the bitcoin;, i definitely will send out your video recording to all of your contacts including friends and family, co-workers, and so on.

Nevertheless, if i do get paid, i will destroy the recording immediately.
If you need proof, reply with Yeah then i will send out your video recording to your 8 friends.
it's a nonnegotiable offer and thus please don't waste mine time & yours by replying to this message.
Bondage is like a foreign film without subtitles. Only through sharing and practice can we hope to understand.
A Jedi uses bondage for knowledge and defense, never for attack.
I am so smart! I am so smart! S-M-R-T!....I, I mean S-M-A-R-T!

These have been going around since a few high profile hacks a few years ago like the LinkedIn one in which large volumes of unhashed passwords were obtained. I've been getting about one a month and while it's disconcerting to see an actual password you've used (in my case for a number of 'low importance' sites) it's a good reason to employ multi-factor authentication on anything important (banks and main email accounts) and password managers or random passwords stored securely for everything else.

I received a similar email last year. The computer would have made images of me that they would send to friends and acquaintances if I did not deposit a certain bitcoin amount. Unfortunately for them, my computer does not have a camera.
So certainly do not respond to such emails, because once you respond to them they know they have a good address.
I now also receive e-mails from people who want to meet me, but they immediately disappear in my trash.
For me it started since I had to install Discord for the school to give my lessons to my students remotely. To register I had to provide my email address and because this also serves when we have a conversation with the board, it was not possible to create a temporary email address.

It's wise to physically obscure your webcam when not in use. Some laptops have a slider for this but otherwise and for desktops just a flap of card taped on so it can be flicked back for use is cheap and effective.

And not just to protect against hacking but against accidentally answering a call from work with video when you're still in your nightie or relaxing in a corset. :-)

I've answered a few calls naked by mistake before, mostly I got called out and had to make feeble excuses,
I use to use yahoo IM and you could switch the camera off or just on for one person or go public and once this caught me out. I had been waiting for a reply call from a guy in South Africa about a product they produced and I never got the call so I switched from personl alert mode to relax mode and I started playing a strip game with someone online and I'd just got to the point of having to be naked when suddenly his call back came and as it was urgent I answered it thinking as I was only on camera permission with my play partner I'd be on mic only to South Africa, I even apologised for the lack of camera, We had a conversion that went beyond normal business talk and he really dragged out the conversion. When after that I went to switch off in the camera function box I realised my camera was set to Public  but worse still I knew from a previous call with him that he was in a busy office with people walking around behind him and sitting close by.
Luckily I didn't have to chat with him anymore after that.

But the most embarrassing time which turned out to be fun was when I had a conversion with a lady from Scotland who I had talked to a lot and afterwards she sent me an email saying she didn't know I was a nudist, God! I was so embarrassed the next time I spoke with her and she commented I was dressed this time but she preferred me naked. I didn't take the bait and strip off there and then but during our conversion it came up that she and her husband were both nudists although she didn't practice it at work. The next time I saw her calling I quickly stripped off before answering, she laughed when she saw me naked again and said she preferred doing business with a naked man as she could see I had nothing to hide.
That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

On my laptop camera I glued a small wound plaster like the right one from https://preventieshop.nl/product/wondpl ... sortiment/. The fabric in the middle protects the camera. If necessary, you can fold a corner on one side so that it can be easily released there.

When I used my desktop, I cut the end from a worn-out sock and I place it over the camera like a little hat. As the camera was separate it was sat to one side and gave a view of me from my knees up. When I took to using a laptop I just sat it on the desk and plugged everything in including the separate, with its little hat but I have just realised I totally forgot about the built-in cam on the laptop.

Think I'll go find the first aid box.
