I think Porn Hub is in trouble.

Post by Shannon SteelSlave »

Without specifically addressing the nature of the battles Porn Hub is facing, they can no longer accept some major credit cards, no longer allow basic users to upload videos, and the download video button is gone. If you had any bondage or self bondage videos you want sitting in your "watch later list", you can still use a 3rd party site for free to download them. I am telling you this because this site may be extinct someday.

Not just PornHub. I've been seeing more reports of people selling "kinky" stuff getting trouble from credit card companies and even getting refused service from them. It's completely ridiculous.

Well, that's PC gone amok. Again.

One can blame the sensationalist media to some extent. They blow up everything to huge proportions like some grotesque inflatable sex doll and from some dubious content on PornHub, everyone gets nervous and it's getting so far that selling kinky toys on the Internet has suddenly been promoted to the same level as the dubious PornHub content. All enabled by the same crowd who gasps in horror when a cucumber is manipulated in barely suggestive way, but are quite content with spreading gossip about the sexual cavorts of the neighbors.

The worst hypocrisy is that this lunacy is from the same ones who preach diversity.

Diversity, my ass. They're no better than a lot of people - they'll praise diversity as long as it resembles themselves.

To be honest I think the removal of the download button can more likely be blamed on the massive amount of piracy that is happening. There's a lot of content on PornHub that the uploader has no rights to, and I can imagine that Pornhub is getting demands from content creators in that regard. Having a download button probably risks them being open to lawsuits. I've seen lots of content from the sponsors of BA on PornHub too and I can't imagine they're very happy about it.

Nah, the reason is this: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/04/opin ... cking.html
And a follow-up article: https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commenta ... ristof-an/

Basically, they've been called out on their lack of moderation of rape and child exploitation videos. Basically all the things things that Kristof suggested have all happened: https://help.pornhub.com/hc/en-us/categ ... and-Safety

All things that should have happened a long time ago.

But inevitably, given the coverage, the CC cos have done what they should have threatened to do earlier, and killed their transactions. Who knows if they'll get it back. FetLife went through this for fairly similar reasons a while ago, but are back, and who knows if a kinder, gentler, less rapey Pornhub will too.

 Welp, that'll show me. I was somewhat aware of the problem, but underestimated how widespread it apparently is. I very very rarely come across that sort of content because it's not something I actively seek out (and would actively avoid too). In this case I guess PornHub is getting what's due.

OK, so I signed into my Porn Hub account, and all of my videos, avatar, is gone. Yesterday, it was fine. So it is now too late to grab any saved videos, the only ones in my previously viewed list are from verified members. Good whilst it lasted, I guess.

Of my close to 100 video list 2 are still watchable. The rest are all giving a message saying "this video is still converting" and cannot be opened. I also just noticed that in the main search bar it now says "search 2.914.599 videos..". I'm sure that used to be WAY more. Seems like they may have just taken down anything not previously verified as being "safe".

Let's hope it's a temporary situation after the announcements and reorganization. And at least the owners can still download their own videos if Pornhub quits.

I don't know. I know what brought them down, but getting some kind of "permission" to "allow" users to upload copyrighted videos to share.......? I think the only reason it stayed up any longer than Napster is because of its dark nature. If you can verify yourself, you can upload your own dark videos. We currently do not host videos at Bound Anna, so if anyone knows another place that can host any video demonstrations of ours, please post, or better yet, start a new thread in Frequently Asked Quetsions or something like that, and title it like "Where can I upload dark videos" or something.

Pornhub has always been in the crosshairs of the paid porn industry / copyright holders, but as long as Pornhub meets the requirements of the DMCA (even if not actually under its jurisdiction) - which basically means taking down specific copyright items after they've been told about them - there's not a lot anyone can do. No-one's going to jail; no-one in the industry (on either side) is going to bring out the big shit cannons, because that stuff sticks to everything it touches. A DMCA here, a copyright suit there, that's all you'll see.

The CC companies don't care, as long as the scrapping is between the porn merchants and it doesn't reflect on them. They're not going to pull CC processing over a civil matter unless they're strong-armed by authority (as happened to Insex a while ago), or something comes out that suggests they are colluding on serious criminal activity.

Put an article on child exploitation in the NYT, and watch everyone run for cover. In the public eye, it's illegal, it's immoral, and no-one is going to back anyone who is seen to facilitate child rape. I expect the Pornhub owners are feeling very, very lonely right now.

I would never tolerate the exploitation of children. If these are the necessary steps to prevent that, then I say let it burn.

I don't think Pornhub's owners really want to either. I'm sure they thought that they could just keep deleting videos when they were told about them, and that would be enough. The trouble is, it isn't.

When you run a small platform, you can assume that most of the players are honest and act honourably, and deal with the small number that won't play by the rules. But when you go from being a small player to be a big player, keeping track of abuse becomes more of a problem, and the impact of abusive participants becomes greater. You can't just keep doing what you did before and think it's all going to be OK.

Look at what's happened to Facebook, Twitter et al over the last few years. They didn't expect to be hauled up in front of Congress and held to account - if you watched Zuckerberg's arrogant responses, you see that he had absolutely no idea that responsibility changes with scale. (He does now, and you see that Facebook's moderation is a lot more pro-active than it was.)

Pornhub is going through the same thing. But since they have no friends right now, it's not clear whether they will survive this.

Who here wouldn't want to moderate for Porn Hub? If you don't answer, I assume everyone's response is yes.

I certainly wouldn't. Regular porn doesn't interest me and a lot of stuff that needs moderating is things like underage/child porn that I really don't want to see.
