Happy Black Friday Eve

Post by Shannon SteelSlave »

Not sure if I am posting this too early, but some people have probably already hit the road to Grand Ma's house for the holiday, and among Vanilla company, won't be checking in here. Wishing everyone a safe holiday. Shan'

Hey, here in Canada, we did it in October. At least the Thanksgiving bit.

But our Thanksgiving doesn't involve early American colonists, but a Governor General by the name of Vincent Massey who in 1957 proclaimed "a general day of thanksgiving ... to be observed on second Monday in October."

He didn't mention anything about discounts on electronic goods or general madness among shoppers. And I'm not even going into toilet paper hoarding (as if that wasn't crazy enough... ).

And yet, in recent years, this madness has spread across the border, like a coronavirus, and infected a significant portion of our population, who will try to bowl you over to get to the checkout line ahead of you, even if your shopping cart only contains groceries (maybe even some toilet paper). Personal experience there.

I think next time I'll take my whip along... :whip:

Eat turkey, drink bourbon, and be merry. For tomorrow we shall madly shop for things we really don't need...

Yeah, that madness has spread here to the UK as well, I just stay well away from it. Especially this year with covid to worry about as well.

We Canuckians have our Thanksgiving on the 2nd Monday in October - while we still can do some cooking outside on the BBQ. 8)

Right now (3:30 am) it's -8C/18F, with the thermometer dragging itself up to 2C/34F later today, definitely not BBQ weather.

We first started observing it officially on November 6th, 1879. The date was later changed to the 2nd Monday in October by an act of parliament in 1957 (at least at that time, some politicians still had common sense) while at the same time making it a statutory holiday (even more common sense... ).

Plus, we don't stampede stores on the following Tuesday looking for bargains on stuff we don't need.

We wait for the American Black Friday to do that. It spread up here like a coronavirus...

Just wait until we send down some cold Canadian air...

Here in the UK we have a consumer magazine/company ("Which") that does some detailed analysis of prices over a wide range of items. Their conclusion is that the much-hyped "Black Friday" sales are at best a flexible approach to honesty, roughly 90% of sales items supposedly "Black Friday" prices are actually no better than sales prices over the previous months. They do point out some of the 10% that are genuinely better than previously.

It's a bit like when in the days before it was outlawed in the UK, a shop could have just one TV, for example, at half-price, yet advertise a "Half-Price Sale Day" implying that all the rest of the TVs were also half-price.
be a switch, double the fun :-)

*********Warning,Warning***********
**Very contrivetsal post ahaed.**

"Black Friday", "Trick a treat" Arrrhhhhh!, Can't you guys in the U.S keep anything to yourselves. Don't we get enough crap already from China?
Some countries should just keep their own traditions to themselves. Imagine if we tried exporting bonfire night to Itlay.

Sorry, just blew my top as I had forgotten it was "Black Friday" and I went shopping. Arrrrhhhhhhh! still in shock.
Love you all really  .

Well you have Guy Fawkes day. I ask people here to recognize it but they just won't. So I think I get it.
Yes, shop till you drop is a heck of a tradition here in the states. And all to celebrate the birth of Santa Claus.
Stay tuned for a rant on the Easter Bunny.

No shopping until you drop here in the UK, most shops can't get the stock.
Of course, we could make the products here ourselves, unfortunately, the once-great workshop of the world is now just an insurance broker. :( :( :(
