If you want to get into developing in C++, I might advise you to work through some basics and also take a look at what Qt has to offer. Qt allows the developer to write cross-platform GUI applications with a lot of OS-specific stuff neatly handled by their libraries. You can find a C++ tutorial here...

For any kind of software I prefer to use Linux (in my case Ubuntu 13.10) or Windows 7. I am with Dark_Lizerd in saying that Win7 and Win8 should be separate options (seeing as they are vastly different)

That's actually not a camera but a small dedicated colour sensor. It ships with various versions of the Lego Mindstorms kits.

Hey Dark_Lizard, I'm finally on a Windows box to test this. Looks like an interesting piece of software, however, I can only get it to detect the Penalties scenario that it generates.. Furthermore, pressing on the 'Task' button, inadvertly crashes the software with a RTE 53 - File not found. Not sur...

Making it run in Linux is actually quite easy, all you need is the JAR file that is the result of building the software. I suppose you took an extra step to make it an EXE file.

One thing that would be nice is to also redistribute the software for platforms other than Windows. There are perfectly good OpenCV libraries available for other systems (i.e. Ubuntu Linux) as well as Java. I'd love to try this, but I don't have Windows set up at the moment.

The first thing I bought was a pair of velcro handcuffs, I still have them, but they don't quite do a proper job of restraining someone.
Some time later, came gags, rope, paddles etc.

All depends on where you're traveling back to.. Some countries wouldn't like metal objects like handcuffs in your luggage, I'm sure. In other countries they would be perfectly fine though. It's all a matter of local laws and regulations.
