Jenny.
OMG, I'm old enough sadly to remember CP/M for Z80 CPU's... swapping disks every time you entered a new command

Personally, I use OpenSuSE for desktop and Development as I can customise it for my needs, and I can emulated any MS stuff and other linux distros. But I'm not your average end user I guess. I use Fedora for NAS, Win7-64 when I want to play silly update games and do all the required reboots till forgot what I switched on to do  :whip: I use Android Tablets and phones (when I get a service here).

I tend to write cross platform these days, write the code once and run on all platforms (except Apple as I cant afford one really, and the squeaky heeled lawyers I might need for the stuff I develop LOL). Maybe one day when there are less draconian attitudes and I'm richer. As a multi-platform user I get tired of the global habit of brand bashing, go with what works for you! To be honest and unless your looking to earn money from popular OS types go with what you have fun with, what ever OS that may be.

As for XP, safe if you run it as USER not ADMIN user I reliably informed. Pity they never knocked all the zero day bugs out of it before dropping the shutter on it. I will continue to use it for my old stuff.

Have Fun, its your computer :D

<three page rant about people who hate windows 8 for no reason. its just 7 with a full screen start menu.>

And an obfuscated control panel, and opening it's little right-side menu whenever my finger strays right of the middle of the track-pad, and a dozen or so other nuisances. All those little irritations just pile up. And the Internet is the land of hyperbole, those dozen or so nuisances become signs of the antichrist or some such.

Windows 8 is way too different, too fast. People don't like too many changes at once. That's why it's not well received.

I don't hyperbolize... I use two words to describe the new interface: it sucks.

It might be cool for a phone or tablet, but for a real computer, nah.

Jenny.

wrong.

it is no different than 7. don't believe the pre-release marketing theorists.

it is exactly the same. nobody uses the windows store or metro apps on the desktop. everybody uses the same apps in the exact same way they have been doing for years.

here it is running on a mac. I have one of those Microsoft surface pro tablets too - and its actually really hard to use because things like files are way smaller than your fingers. So that kind of double dispels the tablet theory.

Good lord, Jenny, you are old! (I'm 22, the oldest I remember is Windows 95.)

Linux and Windows 7 user reporting in. I have Windows 7 on my home desktop, Ubuntu on my netbook, and Ubuntu on my work computer. I love using Linux for software development. I currently work full-time writing code for a product based on the Raspberry Pi, and I've written Linux device drivers before, including a fully-featured audio driver. :)

Also, if nobody uses the start screen then they shouldn't make you jump through hoops to get to the classic desktop. Putting a touch screen interface on the desktop was a bad idea. And putting the touch screen interface on the server edition was a TERRIBLE idea.

Yes, Mistress Jenny. :gag: May I have another?

A friend of mine recently found an old Commodore 1200 in his grandmother's house! He asked me if I wanted it. I thought about taking it, just because of the historical value :D but I'm not sure if it works or not.

Hmmm, I answered the poll literally as Windows XP and Windows 7 because these are the only OSs that the software is available on, so that's what I've been using.

Now, if you want to ask which one do I PREFER to use it on, that would be Linux. In particular, Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi would be nice because then it is trivially easy to interface hardware... Centos Linux is the desktop OS of choice, but any of the major Linux distros would be fine.

You want old??? Sample these words...
Atari 400, Atari 800, Atari 1200, Adam, Coco (Color computer), Tandy (I think), TRS-80, IBM PC, Atari ST, Commodore +4 (It had 4 program built in... and they were not compatible with each other...) Vic-20, Colico-vision (But that may have just been a game machine), Apple, Apple ][, Apple ][c, Mac, Mac 2(Not to be confused with the modern version),... And I remember one that you got as a kit and you put it together yourself...
And that was just the computers...

Most were "closed boxed" the first "open boxed" one I saw was the Apple or apple ][...

Oh yea, in the early days, you had several choices for what computer you wanted... But they were all incompatible with each other...
Each had their own OS, own software... And each had their own faithful followers...
And I've seen many holy wars too...
