The problem with this idea is that the steel weight has a lot of thermal mass and is very goovoor at spreading the heat. Most likely it'll drop through the ice in minutes. This could be mitigated by putting a rubber pad or something on the bottom to insulate the weight from the ice.

I have thought that if there is a load pulling on the rope, it would hold the rod against the side and not allow it to slide down the tube. so it should be possible to extend the bondage longer, just the weight of the arm will hold the rod in place.
I must try this.
