Simple storage to keep keys from being used until time is up

Using a hotel key tag, 2 plastic washers, and an electronic timer padlock, one can safely store keys for locked devices until a set time has lapsed. The tag and washers store the keys and render them unusable. The tag can be broken in an emergency to get to the keys if needed.

Nice!

I’ve never seen that kind of tags before.
Are they meant to be breakable?

No,they might hurt a little if you use your hands. I would probably just hack away at the hole edge with a steak knife or cut with diagonal pliers to force open it.

The lock can be found on Amazon, eBay and AliExpress (And probably any other site that sells "made in China" tat). There's a thread with more info here The keytags I'm having more trouble finding. They should be ubiquitous (I've seen them all over the place) but I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere currently.

That is actually a great idea. I should score a few lines across with a dremel to make "breakaway" sections for safety.

As I recall, you may have the ream the hole a little bigger, you might also have to grind some key heads a little thinner.

Neat. But if getting the tags is hard You could do this with any bit of plastic plumbing pipe.
Just get a section that the keys fit into but cannot be used because they are inside.
Drill a few holes and pass the lock through everything trapping the keys inside.
Maybe even heat the pipe up a bit to flatten it for a lower profile

Actually did that with medicine bottles. Like this better. You can see the keys, and even snap it open in an emergency.
You sound like you would be good at DIY. How about introducing yourself in NEW MEMBER INTRODUCTIONS? We would be happy to meet and greet you right. See you there, Rob.

If you dont want to break anything, or cant from what ever position you may be tied up in, the timer lock has a very easy reset button. Peal of the front display (its just a sticker), and with a paper clip or sim card punch push the little button in the hole that is covered by the display. Reset it to 0, and re stick it back on.

I’m not sure it would be all that easy to remove the display cover without some sort of sharp implement such as shown here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TICY1LdiwO4 , unless you have very sharp finger nails. Also you would need something thin to put in the reset hole. Some bondage scenarios would prevent you from reaching suitable tools. In other cases, this is another good reason to have a lock shield such as I posted here viewtopic.php?f=12&t=12438 . If you wanted to be able to see the time you could probably cut a window, but you would have to make sure the lock could not move sideways very far, so that the reset hole is always covered.
