bound_jenny wrote: Also, for tightlacing the corset has to exactly fit your body. Off-the-rack corsets will not do! That's why I make my own: less hassle, I see the results on the spot, and I am able to make alterations when I notice that something doesn't fit right. Though I have been tightlacing seriously since January 2006, I made my first corset in 1999. The accumulated years of experience have helped me achieve a design method that suits my body and my goals.
A little off topic, but could you point me in the direction of some really great corset-creating tutorials/tips/etc.? I've been contemplating creating my own for a while now and I am not sure where to start. I don't have a lot of sewing experience - would you say a corset is for an advanced seamstress (Is that the correct word?) or could a beginner do it with time and patience?
The word "bagel" is Old English for "butthole bread."

An excellent site for all sorts of reference material (mostly in links) is LISA - the Long Island Staylace Association at www.staylace.com - be prepared for a good long read because this site is huge as far as corset info goes.

If you don't have a lot of sewing experience, making a corset might be a challenge. Not so much sewing it together - anyone who knows how to operate a sewing machine can sew together a couple of pieces of cloth - but getting the sizes right and knowing how to alter after the first test fit is something else altogether. Advanced knowledge helps a lot, but you will need a lot of time and patience (and a lot of extra cloth) if you're a beginner - you'll be learning along the way. Even with good sewing skills, it's not an easy task because you'll be making a garment that will tightly compress your waist and snugly embrace the rest of your body and everything has to be just right to fit correctly and not cause pain or harm.

I would suggest using some scrap cloth for prototypes before going for the final product.

I added some links to the thread above. Another I have found lately is http://sidneyeileen.com/sewing-2/sewing ... oyyn1kSSut

Commercial corsets have one measurement - the waist, which is probably the only one that is variable on a person. They make no account of the hips or bust, neither of which are 'one-size-fits-all'. My own (draft*) custom corset is so much more comfortable than the commercial ones, that I can't recommend custom too highly.

There is also the possibility of making it much longer or putting far more bones in if you wish to make wearing it more of a challenge!

*must get back to making the finished version!
