Ok, we all knew someone had to bring it up for discussion, but I have been thinking about this, and it needs to be raised. Dont yawn - this could save your life...

H Y G E I N E
=========

Butt Plugs, Aneros', Crotch Ropes, Ass Hooks, Vibrators and other toys, they all come into contact with human waste at some point, and although I am sure no-one needs reminding, human waste contains a LOT of very bad bacteria, to name but one of those: E-COLI.

Image

E-coli in normal circumstances is not a threat. The presence of E. coli and other kinds of bacteria within our intestines is actually necessary for us to develop and operate properly, and for us to remain healthy - E. coli, along with other species of bacteria, provide us with many necessary vitamins for example. The bacteria make the vitamins, and we gladly absorb them. We pretty much depend upon E. coli in our intestines for our source of Vitamin K and B-complex vitamins.

However, some strains - such as the O157 strain - are potentially fatal. this strain is more than happy where it lives, in your ass, however when it comes out, and onto that favourite toy of yours, and onto your fingers and in your mouth.......yes doesnt bear thinking about does it??

Hmmmm read on.......

THE SYMPTOMS OF E-COLI POISONING:

E. coli symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in the stools.

Some patients also suffer from a complication, hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which kills red blood cells and can cause kidney failure.

Children under five are particularly vulnerable to HUS. About 5 to 10% of them progress to this stage.

In severe cases, it can cause permanent kidney damage.

Young children are particularly vulnerable because they cannot tolerate much fluid and blood loss.

The elderly and people with damaged immune systems are also more at risk from the infection.

Symptoms may appear within hours or days, depending on a series of factors, including the number of organisms ingested, the person's state of health and their natural resistance to the bug.

Most people shake off the bug within around a week wit the help of antibiotics.

Anti-diarrhoeal medication should be avoided and people should take lots of fluids.

Experts advise people who notice blood in their stools or watery diarrhoea in children to contact their doctor immediately.

What can be done to prevent infection?

Common sense really, but to prevent infection please make sure you always:

+ Use a condom - even on your favourite toy(s). Except crotch ropes for practical reasons

+ Use latex or other rubber-free gloves if you are handling the toys for a partner for example - or cleaning your own.

+ Always use a sterilisation fluid such as dettol or savlon to soak toys after use.

+ Use paper towels to dry toys with or wash immediately any cloths used

+ Incinerate any dirty crotch ropes do not try and reuse them, and incinerate the paper towels used to dry the toys where practicable.

+ Refrain from the act of "rimming"
Click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rimming for a definition.

+ As with last comment this includes the sucking and licking of dirty toys.

+ And never mix food play with ass play.

Note that I realised that some of the hygeine tips given above were aimed at dual player scenarios, and I am aware this is a forum for SELF bondage so for example I appreciate that most of you are unable to and therefore highly unlikely to "lick your own ass hole" (see rimming), but I added them anyway because I am aware that some of you are doms and subs and partake in other stuff as well plus I just thought it was relevant to the topic.

So in heinsight - I appologise for any confusion howsoever caused.

Whao calm down there, soldier. No flaming, please.

Its just an informative article, thats all.

The main point I was trying to make was aimed at newbies to the area to say "Hey look, dont go licking and sucking on used toys that havent been properly cleaned, think first".

As for being over the top, yeah ok, so you got me. But its my job to point out the dangers and give appropriate safety advice, its up to everyone else to decide what to follow or not.

After all you could get run over by a truck tomorrow, but so long as I told you to look both ways before you crossed, then beleive me, I will sleep easy at night.

I see your point that if you followed all of my "reccommendations" then it would be more like a surgical procedure than a fun adult play session which it is supposed to be. Dont get me wrong, I may well be going over the top sometimes with my ideas, and of course you have the right to disagree with certain things - after all this is a discussion forum.

But dont start picking on people and being all aggressive in your posts, its not helpful, and gives us a bad first impression of you...thats not what we are about.

I'm sorry you found my humor inflammatory, that was never my intention. While I understand it was your intention and desire to inform, I simply found your dissemination wanting. Please try not to be overly sensitive to constructive criticism. I never could get with the "Political Correctness" horse shit here in the states. I was not aware that PC had caught on anywhere else in the world. In the future I will take the pains to curb my macabre sense of humor.

No worries, maybe add a few smilies to your posts. One thing I got pulled up for at work only last year was for some sharp witted joke email I sent round the office that someone took the wrong way. :D

As my boss said to me at the time "the importnant things that people can't see in the written medium, is tone of voice, or facial expression".

Straightening my Screen Name and Posts

Well I think curious_sb's hygiene tips are a bit over the top. While I most certainly agree that cleanliness is most essential where ANY rectal play is concerned, one has to wonder if curious_sb incinerates the wash cloth and towel he uses to clean his bum with? Maybe he just uses paper towels and a spray bottle for that. Personally I just wash my bath linens and my ropes with hot soapy water, usually in the washing machine. Leather and other materials get hand washed with alcohol, dettol, savlon or even hydrogen-peroxide. Most any antiseptic will do for cleaning them and toys.
I fully agree that every precaution should be used with any kind of ass play, whether solo or with someone else. It is like ski diving, there is some risk involved in it's practice, so do what you can to minimize the risk without compromising the thrill and fun.

Just Curious

Postby tyerrup » 17 Nov 2006, 06:47

I totally understand where you are coming from on this one, but what of all those people who are into "scat" play where there are no toys involved but the "scat" goes directly from one person to another if you know what I mean. Isn't that the worst-case scenario for exposure to e-coli? Not that they go around telling everyone, but I think by now that I would have read of someone getting e-coli through this method. You know, between the SFGate.COM's "bondage" stories (stories of the weird and bizarre, hardly ever involving bondage, they just call the section that because to them bondage=bizarre) not to mention all the
tabloid papers.

What I think is happening is that people are getting a certain strain of e-coli from infected food (Fresh Spinach anyone?) that is different enough from the strain that lives in our gut that their body can't co-exist with it or fight it off succesfully and they die.

My point is that the e-coli coming from dirty toys is the same strain that is already in the human intestinal tract and therefore should pose no serious risk. Not that I would condone the licking of dirty anal toys as I always found the idea disgusting.

Anyone want to confirm or deny this? Preferably someone with a medical background?

haha, nice definition there. :D personally eating poo doesn't float my boat, but i'm in no position to judge that sort of thing. as far as the health concerns, i'm sure your body is getting rid of it for a reason, so why go putting it back in?

Faeces is in fact toxic, which is why it is not good for you to hold it in. I have never heard of thie e-coli though, so I can't say anything about that. I would have thought that it was common sense to clean toys, but its always good to remind people, but I think as long as the butt plug is just going back in your ass, and not your mouth or something, there is no real risk.

Urine

Urine is safe, though. Usually, urine is practically sterile.

Urine is usually sterile, as its pH is too low for bacteria to survive in, but viruses for example are usually much tougher and might survive. The major problem with urine though is that it contains the toxins that are expelled by the body. If these toxins are ingested in a higher dosage or by a person with bad health, they might be dangerous. Highly unlikely though, I have to admit, at least if you don`t overdo the amount and frequency of urine you come into contact with.

btw, e.coli is usually unharmful in the digestive tract, the guts are inf act full of them as already mentioned, and the stomach acid will usually kill them off. Even if they come into contact with the reproductive organs they will most likely be killed off by the low pH in those areas as well. The real danger is that e.coli or other digestive bacteria, if they are swept into areas of damaged skin, they can actually start attacking the body tissue (so-called "flesh-eating" bacteria). MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) might be the most prominent example for one of those infections. It is quite common in hospitals and in some cases causes necrosis if it comes into contact with an open wound. The worst part though is, that because they live in humans, those bacteria have frequent contact with antibiotics and tend to be immune to many common antibiotics.

edit: I am too tired to think straight right now, so if anything is hard to understand, I will probably edit it into a more readable version tomorrow.

There is no danger here when playing by yourself. The only E coli. in your feces are the strains you already have. If there is "LOT of very bad bacteria" in your feces, you will already be sick and won't be doing any harm by ingesting it. However, when it comes to play with other people, the real risk is transmission of Hepatitis A and the well-known intestinal parasites.

Furthermore, the ingestion of both feces and urine is safe in reasonable quantities. Your body is incredibly resilient and if it got rid of waste once, it can do so twice.
