The candle release is actually the first release method I ever tried. While it can be used safely enough I had never mentioned it here to fore because the forum rules prohibited discussing it. However, when it came up I weighed in with what I knew from experience. Like Shiva_in_Cuffs911 I have never had a problem with it, but know of far too many who did.

How many do you know "who did"?
Three in the last five years. Over my life time, Mmmm maybe a 12 to 16 who ran afoul one way or the other, including one who burned to death in Hawthorn California in 1972.

Neo wrote in response top my opinion on SB wax-play:
The problem (and benefit) of internet access to a forum like this is that any newbie could stumble through here and try something out they are not ready for, or without fully thinking it through.
As I read Anna's comment in this thread, she's concerned with the suggestion of having a source of fire burning (a candle) while in a self bondage scenario. That seems entirely reasonable to me.
If it tickled you shitless that a comment on safety was made before allowing the thread to continue, then I'd suggest you go start your own forum somewhere else, or failing that, attempt to sound a little less arrogant in your writing style.
It must be remembered that most all of this type of play carries risk. I readily acknowledge that 90% of the time I consciously choose to play without a net, so to speak. I can NOT live my life worrying whether someone is going to be stupid because they read something I wrote. Obviously someone didn't read any of the RED LETTER warnings I posted concerning risk awareness, and advice to minimize the risk in this thread topic alone.
Not sure at all how you figure I have any kind of problem with the safety comment made by our much loved and esteemed forum Administrator. YES I am Extremely Delighted to the Nth Degree that she allowed this thread topic to continue. No idea why, but this seems to bother you. And I really fail to see how my comments can be construed as arrogant. If you sincerely feel I should go start my own forum somewhere else, I respectfully suggest you just avoid reading my post if they up set you so. :(

I'm re-reading alot of the old post and came across this one again...
If you really like the candle as a release, try this one...
"Ice candle"...
Get a candle shaped mold and freeze some water in it...
Attach the loop for the string at the time you want to be released...
now, you can watch your "candle" melt down to freedom...
If it tips over, you will just have some water to clean up...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

There are only two things in life that are GUARRANTEED,

DEATH

TAXES

Everything else is down to fate and luck. I dont advocate the use of fire in bondage at all.

That said I have looked at this and the theory is quite sound, with teh exception that candles can just go out of their own accord, according to the 1st law of Murphy. I'd have a backup with this one, if I were to use it, because if the candle does go out. You are stuck. Stuck like a pig, like a pig thats well and truly stuck.

Actually no Ive changed my mind, I've put myself off the idea now...

I was watching my gf over live cam because she lives in Vernon (40km away) anyways she used a candle as a release. A breeze came in the window and blew the candle out. I laughed at her for a bit. Then I took my moped and went over to release her. She was pretty shook up so I made her dinner :)

Well candles blowing out shouldn't really be a worrie...thats why people should use a back up release...one you wouldn't want to use normally. ike urine in a back you'd have to chew through to get a key. Or something like that.

Also if you were to use a candle be carefull that the string doesn't burn and leave the key with the candle.

Did have a thought on a "safe" candle release...
You need a ballon that will take the heat...
place a small container (bottle) with the ballon that covers the top...
Light and place a small candle under the bottle, needs a little bit of water...
The candle will heat the bottle and boil out the water which will inflate the ballon...
Now, when the candle goes out (or if it gets blown out), the bottle will cool and suck the air back from the ballon will shrink...
... now, you just need a way that this will trigger the release....
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

Having a backup in case the candle blows out is always a good idea. A backup is always a good idea with any release.

The only thing I don't like about candles is not the blowing out bit, but more like the reverse - the flame spreading. It may be just a candle, but it's still fire. A small mistake and you're toast - literally.

hmm...tbh i'm a bit of a flame freak. Love the stuff. Never get bored with it...and yes i've set myself on fire more then once (i've lost count) but a candel that doens't fall over and is not near fabric is not going to spread. But don't overestimate how far above the flame gets hot it's a suprising way.

I wonder, if you were to put a lit candle on say a metal pan or sheet of aluminum foil and it fell over, what would happen? the foil wouldn't melt (we cook food in foil on fire pits, don't we?) would the fire be able to spread that way?

:) Just a thought.

As said many times before, fire is usually a bad idea. But then so is pretty much everything. Tying yourself up and waiting for a key to drop is a pretty risky idea in the first place. So as long as you fully understand what you're doing and take every outcome into account, you should be fine either way.

I don't know what the ratio is for candle fires but it's probably something like 1 in 1000. It's dangerous but it's not like some magical thing that can set fire to anything. Just put it in a baking tray full of water and if it tips it's certainly not going to explode in a fireball (unless you mistook water for gasoline). I'd trust this more than the ice block one because I'm never sure it's going to unfreeze properly. Maybe that's because my first session using ice ended with me having to snap a wooden staircase pole because the damn string got tangled...

For me the risk with this scenario is the rope.

Clearly the rope may be flammable and, particularly when you've tied a knot, some of the rope may end up closer to the flame than is ideal.

Make sure the wire stuck in the candle is long so the rope is far away, or use (uncoated) chain.

I would also make sure all the windows are closed so there are no unwanted draughts or intruders. I've once had a neighbours cat come into my room during self-bondage, and it's not unheard of for birds to enter rooms. If a bird flies in looking for a perch it might choose the rope and pull the candle over. I believe this is more likely than a plane.

Make sure any back up release you use is rapid, for obvious reasons.

If i have the windows open nothing comes in...if i close them birds fly into them...stupid things.

Anyways, yah i think the rope being flamable may be a problem (see one of my previouse posts)

As for the whole setting the house alight thing, if your feel ther is a possibility for then then DON'T do it. Even if you do make sure you have a quick release, from my experiance fire can spread very VERY quickly.

Make sure thee is nothing flammable arond the candle, that ifit tshould fall over then it won't do anyhting but go out.

Also if the key may be hot DON'T touch it, wait for a while before release.
