I have heard that you should not do selfbondage with a gag?

I have heard that you should not do selfbondage with a gag in your mouth, but I have seen people talking about gagging themselves when doing self bondage. I have a lovely ballgag, would it be dangerous to gag myself while doing this?g

The simple answer is yes it is dangerous, if you start a gag reaction (catarrh build up, vomit, nose blocking, etc) and you cannot free yourself quickly you risk choking.
But then self bondage is dangerous in itself, if something happens while you are bound and you cannot get free!
Unfortunately all of life is a risk, so we do our best to indulge our kinks and be as safe as we can, but part of the fun is in the risk :)

That's basically it. But we are not just taking risks, we're in the business of risk management. We counter the risk of being trapped, either through an error in applying the bondage or some kind of domestic emergency, by having an emergency release.

I like gags, but I know how my body behaves. Jimdini mentions nasal congestion - I get that a lot. There are some days where I avoid gags. Then again, I can manage or mitigate that risk with a quick shot of nasal decongestant spray up each nostril, if needed.

When you break it down, it's up to each of us to manage the risk. We still take the risk but as responsible perverts, we make sure that those risks are either mitigated or compensated.

Rushing headlong into any scenario without any forethought or planning (i.e. hormones vs. neurons) is always the worst possible risk situation.

Jenny.

As with anything, when done improperly, it can be risky.

I personally don't consider a gag to be too dangarous if you are not laying on your back.

If you lay on your back it is far more dangarous because swallowing is so much harder and thus a gag reflex is far easier to happen.

Also, it depends on the gag. A small gag that you can push out of your mouth is far safer than a big one that fills almost all the space in your mouth.

Lastly, when wearing a gag, it is not a good idea to keep the saliva build up in your mouth. You must be willing to let it drip out of your mouth onto whatever it can drip on. Swallowing with a gag can be more dangarous, but by allowing the saliva to drip out from the other end means you don't need to swallow, and thus the chances for a gag reflex are slim. Of course laying on your back means this can't be done.

Lastly, if you start doing this, do dry runs. Hmm, bad wording in this case... Do practice runs. Yeah, much better.

Place yourself in the position for the duration of the bondage, but don't tie your hands up, so you can immediately get the gag out in case of an emergency.

Also, if a practice run goes fine once, that doesn't mean it will always goes fine. During the practice runs, look at possible things that can go wrong, and test what happens if that is indeed the case.

Keep in mind, hurting yourself badly during a self-bondage session is really bad, causing something that doesn't seem to hurt much may in the end still kill you, and that is even worse.

For example, if you rely on being able to get a key by pulling a string, and it is your only way to get out, but pulling the string does not free the key, and as a result you cannot escape your bondage, then you will be bound for many hours. Days even, until you starve to death. Of course if you have a gag in, and something like this happens, you will likely die a lot sooner because when you start panicking, your body changes and the chances of getting a gag reflex increases.

As others have pointed out- yes, assuming it's inescapable selfbondage, it can be dangerous. It may not be perfectly safe even with an emergency release. But since I rarely bother with locks, I always use a gag as I can readily escape. I know some will say, "It's not real bondage unless you want out". But I will say "It's not real bondage unless you're well-gagged!"

For safety, one sometimes has to compromise in selfbondage- either locked and inescapable waiting for the timer, ice or searching for keys or well-gagged but with a quick way out.

A whiffle-ball gag could be a safer alternative.

It does not exactly impede breathing and drooling.

There's probably an order of danger with gags that's something like (least to most dangerous):
  • Ring gag / dental gag
  • Bit gag
  • Ball gag with holes
  • Small ball gag
  • Large ball gag
  • Butterfly gag
And certainly that list is incomplete, the order is debatable, and it varies from person to person, but you see the idea. If you vomit, you might be OK with a ring gag (surely unpleasant though) or a even a bit gag, but are those holes in the ball gag really big enough? For nasal congestion, maybe you can even breath around a small ball gag, but no hope with a butterfly gag.

My policy is: if I'm using a gag (or hood) that has the potential to cause breathing problems, I make sure I have an instantaneous emergency release. Under those conditions the only release system I'm really comfortable with is wrist cuffs held in place by electromagnets and a release switch in each hand. Hitting a release switch de-energizes the electromagnets and frees my hands immediately to take care of whatever else is going on. And if the gag was lockable, I'd for sure leave it unlocked so there's no fumbling with keys and locks while I'm panicking / gagging / choking (though I've fortunately never had those things happen).

I do also use a nasal spray before-hand to make things more comfortable and decrease the chances of needing that emergency release.

So it's kind of trading the feeling of having no control over the duration of the session for that nice feeling of a full mouth.

Doing selfbondage or any bondage without a gag makes it incomplete for me in a way that most of the pleasure is removed. If there's no gag, then what's the point? I have to feel completely helpless but I can make concessions where I'll be mostly helpless.

My typical gag is ballgag/duct tape combo. It's super-effective but also somewhat risky if you're not used to it because the duct tape prevents you from drooling the saliva out.
If I think a gag may be problematic during a selfbondage session, I might just go with duct tape only. It's not perfect because I can always work off duct tape.

But with ballgag only, vomiting is the only real issue. Saliva will drip out and you can still breathe with some difficulty around a ballgag. If you're not prone to vomiting, then you're probably ok.

Just my own personal preference, but I never play with anything to do with breathing or the neck. There's just a s**tload of ways that can go wrong.
