Operating Systems

Post by kevlar »

I was wondering what OS most people are using these days, so I can determine how much effort should go into packaging the software I contribute here. And coincidentally, I found the Poll Creation option, so....go! :whip:

I'm with XP Pro at home, and in an emergency, I can dust off a really, really old Pentium 133 (1997) with NT 4 in it (dual boots with DOS and Win 3.1, just to be really, really perverted... ).

Ahh, good to see you let us check off more than one. My laptop is (slated to become) a Debian machine - currently Windows 8 and needs to get changed to something a little more streamlined; the desktop's a Windows 7, largely for compatibility purposes.

And my vote is for: Linux and Mac.

And to list current running OSes at home (5 in regular use): Debian 7 (Wheezy) (x2), Mac 10.6, Xubuntu 10.04, Dual boot Windows 7 / Kubuntu/Edubuntu (x2), and for my work laptop, Dual boot Mac 10.9 / Win7. I also use for testing, vmware instances of OpenSuse 11/12, Lubuntu, Windows 8, and Windows XP.

My hat's off to you bound_jenny, your deviance far exceeds my own to still be hanging onto a NT/Dos/Win3.2 box.

For any kind of software I prefer to use Linux (in my case Ubuntu 13.10) or Windows 7. I am with Dark_Lizerd in saying that Win7 and Win8 should be separate options (seeing as they are vastly different)

Windows 7 and Window 8 are not vastly different. The exact same code base all the way back to Windows NT. Window 8 is slightly faster and more secure than it's predecessor and has an awful UI to alienate most of it's loyal users. Fom an installation point of view, most anything I can install on 7 will work without issue on 8.

Any computer running XP will self-destruct in five seconds after the user finds out...

(my Win 3.1 machine still works... that was before they put the self-destruct mechanisms in)

A friend of mine bought a new PC with win8 on it...
It looked like a very large smart phone... or a tablet...
I almost could not figure it out...
But for some using a smartphone... it is perfect...(they did)
For some used to a "real" PC... format and reload...
I just hope win9 will be for PC users...
As for wn7 and win8 being the same...
Inside maybe,
outside... well... only if a VW bug looks the same as a mac truck!!!

That is precisely the awful UI I was referring to, as well as my subtle references to 'Window 8' rather than 'Windows 8'. Desktop tiles and hidden 'Charms' were a misguided attempt to unify Phone/Tablet interfaces with the Desktop experience. This is Microsoft's second 'Vista' flop and will likely plague them for some time. Window 8.1 and 3rd party tools can restore the start menu, although many programs still startup as a single 'Window' occupying the whole damn screen.

All in all, nothing there to get me past Win7.
