Software: Universal Email Lock

Post by irithnum »

Hi folks!

I have written a peace of software called "Universal Email Lock". The idea behind it is, to provide some very flexible, and much more important, some secure ways of locking. Actually, I adopded the idea of a user from this forum, but I can't find the original post at the moment...

Basically, the software sends an email (which may contain some embarrassing content of yourself) to a person of your choice when the lock is getting opened without permisson. The lock can eighter be a software (e.g.: Selfbondage Colour Finder) or a hardware usb board with a simple electronic switch connected to it. At the moment I only support Vellemann K8055 board, but I am planning to support Ardruino Uno too - depends on how many people are interersted in this project.

Have a look at the Szenario.pdf file in the zip (it is also in root of download folder) file for getting a clue, what the software is able to do...
Just run the sofware (you will need .net framework 4), its quite straight forward - I implemented the software as a kind of configuration wizard.

Have fun, send me errors If you find some (I only testet 32bit Win, seems to be quite stable) or give me any other feedback! Looking forward on some respond! Please give the software a test before using it in a real session...

Welcome, irithnum!

I really like this idea, however I am having an issue trying to get this to work. I took the liberty of taking a screenshot...
Image

This is what happens when I attempt a test email to myself.

I have never used SMTP to sent emails before, so I might be doing things a little wrongly, though here's my settings...

SMTP server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 465
SSL enabled: yes
Username: My email (i can PM this if needed)
Password: My Yahoo account's PW

I had followed the instructions via this website...
http://email.about.com/od/accessingyaho ... ttings.htm

I do look forward to any progress with this software, hopefully I can get it to work soon, if at least for proof of functionality for myself.

Hi hawkward

I wont find the time until next weekend, to have a deeper look at this, but as far as I know, yahoo does not support pop3/smtp functionality for free users (not shure if this limitation is only valid for US accounts). Do you use a free account? You could try any local mail client (eg. thunderbird, or maybe something smaller) to test your server settings. If this is causing the problem, yout could...

- have a look at be following tool (http://sourceforge.net/projects/yahoopops/) - actually i never tried it.
- use another free webmail account
- pay for a plus account, does not sound that good  :-)

So, got it...

The following email setting for yahoo are working for me:

Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Port: 587
SSL: yes
Email: youremail@yahoo.com
Username: youremail@yahoo.com
Passwort: yourpassword

Dont send too many testmails, yahoo may suppose abuse. Also try to change the testmail text...
