Also in 2000, on 9/9/99, and countless other times in history (there also was a Y1K scare, but for non-computer reasons, obviously). And they could get very creative, like one famous person who predicted that the old Mir space station would crash into Paris and cause a giant nuclear explosion that would destroy Earth. Harold Camping, an American preacher, predicted an early end of the world on May 21st, 2012, which didn't happen, so he re-scheduled it for October 21st (my birthday, of all dates, quite the present). And it went by without the slightest catastrophe (other than someone dropping a piece of birthday cake on the carpet).

Predicting the end of the world is an activity with a 100% failure rate.

But it is 100% successful at making suckers spend their money.

Camping actually had quite a following if I remember correctly? Sadly a lot of those suckers that followed him gave away all their stuff or sold it in preparation for the end of the world

All attempts to predict the end of the world have fail and will fail. Only reason 2012 was so hyped up was because the Mayans calender ended which is the longest calender that was made by the ancients. :P So, a lot of people assumed that meant the end of the world hahahaha. But, boy that Harold Camping made me laugh a lot  he predicted the end of the world before his prediction in May 2012.

Wondering when the next prediction will surface

http://alma-geddon.com is a real internet classic!

I don't think is has been updated for a long time, but the collection of "nope, it was not this time either"-stories are really worth settling in a good armchair with a cup of tea to read.
1516 CE -
This was the year the fifth Lateran Council got together and said, "Enough, already!!!" and banned all apocalyptic prophecy throughout all Christendom... This lasted, oh, maybe, five minutes.

I absolutely must peruse that one! 8)

Like Tmacster, I prefer a nice hot coffee, but a hot mug of Earl Grey will do nicely too.

Regardless of beverage, I'll try to avoid spitting it all over my computer equipment when I burst out laughing.

I think some people committed mass suicide when comet Hale-Bopp came around - not exactly the "end of the world" but that like the believers would get to go to heaven via the comet...

Happy Holidays! (I am pagan scum!)

That would be the Heaven's Gate cult, down San Diego way. They thought the comet was a spaceship coming to pick them up. All 39 of them.

I thought it was just gorgeous through my telescope. But I didn't see any warp engines.

Though not as bright, comet Hyakutake was more interesting through the telescope. I could actually see it move against the background stars. Real time astronomy!

I'm outright evil (and massively politically incorrect), and I still say Merry Christmas. :hi:

I'm worse, I'm a completely godless scum........ But any excuse, be it religulous or secular, that can inspire party or a perverted rite of light, dark, fertility or whatever, is something I grasp (no, not just grasp.... grope and fondle!) with enthusiasm.

My love of bacon and beer kind of ruins ramadan for me....
