Death of the BDSM websites?

Post by dante33 »

I've noticed, over the last couple of years, that the amount of good BDSM websites are getting smaller every day. I primarily enjoy metal bondage, so I'm sad to see great sites like shackledmaidens, steelsubmission and the like closing. Kink.com has drastically reduced content due to cash-flow issues and so on. It seems most of the sites now are just one man doing his thing (metalbondage, cuffgirl, girlsincuffs etc) - although he does do it well.

Why do you think that is? Is it the increased availability of free, trojan-ridden streaming sites?

Piracy, "amateur" content, changing expectations on price levels, regression in public acceptance of kink, economic changes making people prioritize their limited cashflow on different stuff. I think it's not one single thing but certainly the adult content industry has been struggeling since around the mid 2000s.
How may I serve you? *Curtsey*

My 2 cents, and i happen to have discussed this topic with a couple of webmasters.

Not new, membership sites struggle since the late 00's with shrinking sales.
As with everything, multiple reasons:
One of them, and that is ironic, finding a payment processor for your site.
Apparently it is a moral problem for banks if people use their CC to purchase kinky
Content online. So it's difficult for a site to find a cc-processor without having
To spot a couple k+ $ in advance.
(No joke: the same banks, who have no problem perverting every reason they where initially created in the 15th century in italy to turn a profit reject kinky sex as amoral)

What we see is a regression to the mean.
In the very late 90's/early 00's running a good paysite was way more profitable
Thsn being a central bank/federal reserve.
6k+ members 10 years ago may equal 1k+ nowadays, because the novelty has worn off; there is a proliferation of sites, catering to every imaginable fetish
(Though i have yet to see that dinosaur-canivore-fetish somebody asked about @ another board).

6k+ x 30 $ ÷ 180k cashflow every month.
No wonder there was a goldrush.
And peter from kink.com is a special case.
He did his 1st professional shoots in his mothers bedroom,
Because he had no appartment of his own.
Kudos to him to make it work until he got megalomaniac.

What his story tells us is you can't industrialise kink porn.
It's about the visuals, but more important are the emotions, enjoyment/ suffering, satisfactions have to be real.
Kink is an intimate part of our personality that we cherish and protect.
Having it trivialised by an industry 4.0 revenue chain will turn us off.

That's peter's problem & i'm glad he has it, becsuse it shows we kinksters care.

I ranted, didn't i ? I'm not finished, but i typed that on my phone & i don't suffer
From TMDS, so it has been a piece of work.
Besides, it should be enuff input to stir up the discussion.

A fine explanation, Pony. It makes perfect sense and gets into the details of why and when.

Does Barney the purple dinosaur count?

That's absolutely right. You can't crank out quality porn like a factory stamps out plastic cutlery.

I have to go back to our dearly departed Gord - he knew how to produce great material, with a personal touch, and it was always something that was deeply erotic and touched sensitive strings deep inside the viewer. Even the set-up videos were irresistibly sexy - and even funny when one listens to the friendly and often humorous banter between the models/actresses and the crew. The atmosphere and the dynamic counts just as much as the erotic content. Otherwise one might as well just film two people having at it in the sack.

So basically, if a porn site wants to have traffic, there has to be a quality product - just like any other business.

And why do banks seem squeamish about handling payments for kink sites? Same reason politicians and other public figures are so adamant about stamping out sexual harassment but behind the curtains there just as perverted - and often more so - as we are. Though in a much more sinister way. It all boils down to image.

Ugh... now I'm ranting...

...on an actual keyboard...
