Automatic retracting and locking straps

Post by BornThisWay »

I've always wanted to use a seatbelt system as an automatic retracting and locking strap.

I did a little reaserch into it and there are two modes to modern seat belts.

The first is the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) that temporarily locks the strap when it is quickly pulled, like in a crash.

The other is the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) which activates when you extend the belt all the way.
It goes into an automatic retract and lock mode meant to secure child seats.

Wouldn't it be awesome to incorporate this action into a bondage table?

After you lock yourself in, if there was any slack, it will (click, click, click) tighten it as you wiggle.
The release mechenism could be a retaining pin that gets pulled from the opposite side of the seat belt. I'll try to draw a diagram of what I mean later.

This is a quote from a 2010 Nissan Frontier owner's manual -
"The Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode (child restraint mode) locks the seat belt for child restraint installation. When the ALR mode is activated, the seat belt cannot be extended again until the seat belt tongue is detached from the buckle and fully retracted. The seat belt returns to the ELR mode after the seat belt fully retracts."

I read a story involving these...
The girl secured herself for her boyfriend, but her, or his, sister, showed up and pushed her to the limit of the belts...
It was a very good story...

I can post the story, if I have it, or a link if I can find where I found it...
All advice is checked, re-checked and verified to be questionable...
Don't ask, we both wont understand the answer...

Make sure to get some without pyrotechnical tensioning mechanisms!
The will be expensive and pretty dangerous in case they fire when you are attached to them, already stretched to the limit.....

Not a good idea for a sb scenario but it was an acceptable one for a horror movie.

I have actually never heard of seatbelt straps catching fire with its own mechanism. They don't even operate with electricity... I feel like i'm missing something here :P Tools for cars are normally made as child-proof as possible. They are extended and retracted hundreds of thousands of times per day by numerous people.

It's the high end seatbelts. I didn't realize such a thing existed until Sir Cumference mentioned it.

You have now.

A modern car contains a couple of kilos of explosive material. Most of it is for inflating the airbags, but there are also the pyro-mechanic devises.

They just sit there waiting for the car's sensors and computers to register a "crash in progress", in which case they will get the signal to fire (not "catch fire").
In case of the seat-belts, they will reel in any slack wit a quite hard pull.

In case you used them outside the normal setting (where a lot of effort is put into preventing accidental firing), a stray current could maybe fire them, and my guess is, that you could get seriously hurt.

In some cars the pyrotechnics are in the buckle, and in some they are in the "spool".

Buckle type: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iVwnAmoT1yM

And an animation of a spool type: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qDOMf-a1QUc
The pyrotechnical parts are single use 8) Well hidden and you hope that you will never need them.
(And the car companies do not talk about how much fun is hidden in your car, nor about the fact that you could crash in it)
