I was thinking about the classic trigger problem: How to release a large force with a small trigger force.
And then I got to think about, how cut-away is done on a modern parachute:
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/3-ring_release_system
It is called "the three ring release system"
A loop in a loop in a loop.
Every loop cuts the force in more than half.
An low price version would have several bondage applications!
In my test setup I use 50cm pieces of flag-line tied in loops, then stuck through 10mm holes in a piece of wood.
Hole-hole distance is 5cm.
Whatever you want to release goes over the first loop, the second loop is threaded through #1, then #2 goes through #3, which is held by the release.
In the test, the release is just a clothes peg held by two rubber bands.
When the release is triggered, the loops unravel and release the load.
I have not tried hanging from it, but I can't pull it open by hand.

That's how it works with technology - first the military develops it, and then it trickles down to the civilian population.
And we pervert everything.

And we pervert everything.

This is ingenious. I've been pondering the same problem and here it is, solved!

Love the idea. Have you ever looked in to sailboat hardware? I would suggest a snap shackle to release a heavy force with a small force. They come in many styles and varieties.

Re: "Parachute style" heavy release:
I know those, and they are very nice for some purposes.
There are lots of different "quick release" gizmos.
Compared to the load they carry, the release force is small, but in absolute numbers, they still need several kilos to release.
They are build that way. You do not want them with a "set trigger" for most uses. They must not fire, unless you actuate them deliberately and forcefully.
(And they are quite low cost at the local farm shop)
If you on the other hand wants the "trigger" to be a very small force like a solenoid or a small servo, you have nowhere near the force required to actuate these quick releases positively and consistently.
The parachute release enables the use of a small trigger force, that is why I experimented with it and why I considered it worth sharing with the forum.
