OK, this is something I know nothing about, so asking the advice of the forum.
I'm thinking about using a polythermal plastic to make a gag that fits into the top and bottom palates and is held there with a denture adhesive such as Fixadent. Is this a stupid thought? Would I be able to get it out when I desire or would I have to wait until the adhesive looses its grip?

Denture adhesive is strong stuff. I would recommend against it. You may break a bit of your teeth if you try to remove it before it dissolved enough.
