"Oogoo": DIY silicone clay (it could be useful!)

Post by Sir Cumference »

I saw "Sugru" some time ago and have wanted to play with it. But it comes in small and expensive packets. How much fun can you have with a 5 gram lump of silicone?

And then I stumbled across "Oogoo".

Basically it is made by kneading together one volume of silicone ( the acetic acid type ) with one volume of corn starch. It can be shaped like plasticine for about ten minutes with a bit of soapy water on the hands, and will then harden completely in about an hour.

The first tests are promising!

I'll be back!

I started out with making some rods, spheres and sheets. They are very springy and surprisingly strong.
The spheres are really bouncy.

I will play with some more complex shapes too, now that I've seen it work.

(Materials used were "GE silicone I" and regular corn starch)

It tears like normal silicone rubber, but you have to be pretty violent to do it.

Whether it is body-safe or not is a good question.
It actually says on the tube, that it has been declared "safe for incidental contact with food" by the FDA.

I think a condom would be a good idea for internal use. Both because of the acetic acid and because of the anti microbial additives.

Very impressive.

I used to cast some things out of hot melt glue but that was a lot more difficult and less useful. This seems to have a lot of utility, I could think of lots of interesting things to do with it.

As for body safe, I imagine it will depend on the silicone compound itself. Obviously silicone can be body safe. The issue is additives as you said. I think for any sort of internal use yeah a condom is a good idea. And I personally would not put it in my mouth(not uncovered). Even if it says safe for incidental contact with food. I mean, a solid piece of food touching the silicone for a few seconds is "incidental" - having it in your mouth and biting or scraping it with your teeth, constantly in contact with your saliva which you then swallow, and so on and so forth is well beyond incidental.

But yeah anyway this seems like some pretty excellent stuff. As for that plug thing you made out of it - what are you using to create molds? Or did you do that by hand?

Wasn't there a president who said something like that?

No mold used for this one, just modeling with soap water on the fingers.
The soapy fingers give a really nice smooth surface too.

I have made other things by making a model in plasticine, covering that with liquid latex, removing the plastici and then sacting in the lates mold.
This is quite a bit easier!

And today one of the kids stuck her hand in the box of mixed samples and pulled out the plug!

But thankfully, she is still pure and just asked: "What is this? Some kind of handle?"

I managed to answer, that it was just a shape experiment.

It's strange how much freedom can be felt in a tight bondage.

You should get her to pull tickets out of the hat at a raffle. She's a sure-fire winner!

Another creation:

The stuff can be colored, and you can start out by making a basic shape, then add more later. The additions stick completely.

"Art"

Anything that is a bit weird, and not outright explicable, can be justified with that little three-letter word.

But unfortunately it is named "tentacle.jpg" so you can call it art, or a handle, but we know.

We totally know :P

Neat use of the stuff though!
